BEHIND THE LENS

I love photography and have taken on many projects over the years. Mostly self-taught, I started when I was about 12 years old. My dad, a chemical engineer, who had done a lot with photography got me started. I photographed black and white pictures with a 35mm and medium format camera. I developed many pictures and learned techniques associated with working in a darkroom such as: dodging, burning, toning and hand coloring. The chemical process involved made it difficult to find dedicated space for a darkroom.

When digital photography, Phototshop and Epson printers came along I was in photography heaven. I really didn’t know how little I new about art, however, until I married a successful oil painter. We critiqued paintings and photographs, discussed composition, color combinations, and we continue to develope feelings and impressions by telling stories with  pictures.

Living in New England my whole life I’ve enjoyed backpacking and hiking since I was a child. The last 15 years I traveled around the United States with a backpack and a camera. I have encountered some amazing places. I find Maine to be one of the most beautiful places and I love taking photos here.

A beautiful image is nothing without a beautiful print. I rarely trust this work to a lab. It is as personal as the initial capture. The look and feel of a gorgeously textured, heavy cotton rag paper is wonderful. I normally print all my images myself.

My solo exhibitions in Maine have been exhibited as far away as Saint Petersburg, Russia. I have many loyal collectors and my work has spread to many parts of the US and Russia, Ireland and France. My work has been published in magazines and I have several CD covers.
